Welcome to the October Newsletter. We are still having fun and going strong. Lots of events going on and the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum is making things happen.

"We're Moving Ahead" is exactly what we are doing these days. We are becoming The New and Improved Wichita Falls Railroad Museum because the current "team" is still working hard to make many good things happen within the museum with the help of Members and Board Members. This Museum has accomplished things recently and has seen some very positive moves that it has never seen before. We are planning many more events which we will tell you about later. Well done gang!!!! We will continue to move Ahead too.

A Ledgend in his own time. Mr. U. E. Boyette is still going strong in Wichita Falls. He visits the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum from time to time to visit the Fort Worth & Denver # 304 Steam Locomotive which he used to engineer many years ago. He still knows his way around the locomotive as seen in the photo above where he stands on a running board and hangs on to a "grab iron" as he talks about his days working on this old steamer.

Mr. Boyette Was born February 12th, 1925. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1942 and was in till 1945. He is a survivor of Iwo Jima, Sipan, Luzon and Pearl Harbor.

Mr. Boyette worked on and engineered steam locomotives from 1946 till 1986. Mr Boyette and his twin brother engineered the Bicentineal Freedom Train into Wichita Falls in 1976 and Mr. Boyette was last employeed with WFISD for many years and still lives in Wichita Falls.

Mr. Boyette, Thank You, and we salute you!

Train Video of the month

This video is from pretty close to home this time. It and the next two
videos and photos are from the rebuilding of the 7th street crossing
1/2 block north of the museum.

(These are fairly long videos.... slow connections will take a few moments to load)

Just in case you're wondering, Yes, I talked the project manager out of some of the Rubber Crossing pads that had been used at the tracks on the 7th street crossing. Yes, a little more history from many years of use at the 7th street railroad crossing, now at the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum.

With the golf cart, trailer and the help of the inmates, we loaded up the pads and brought them back to the museum for placing them on our tracks. We will now have better crossings at the 2 tracks near where the pump car loads & unloads.

We will eventually relocate these pads to other locations at the museum, but this is their storage spot for now.

The New Kiddie Train is looking great and there is still a little more work needed. Did you notice the lettering? Still more lettering to go on.

Every now & then, ole Slim pops out from nowhere in the golf cart usually pulling the trailer to haul the heavy loads for the inmates.

We're getting a facelift and "Wow!", is it looking different around the museum. Bunchgrass is literally being dug up out of the brick streets and and dug up and away from the edge of the concrete street too.

Next Projects coming up We have some painting to do on the Motor cars or speeders and associated equipment also the Railway Express carts and the wrought iron fence on the north side of the museum. The inmates have done a terriffic job of cleaning out the flower beds, and now that all the vegetation is cleared off the curbing and fence, we can finally paint the fence.

Downtown Lights Celebration November 20th We will have at least one Kiddie Train in the parade that evening as well as festivities going on at the museum. Yes, food, Sodas, Hot Coffee, Hot Chocolate, and we are going to have fried pies this year. They were such a success year before last, folks were asking about the fried pies last year and we had not booked them because our fried pie man moved away. Now we know how big of a hit they made with everyone and we will have Cherry, Peach, Appricot, and Apple. If you would like to help out on the train this year with the celebration, please e-mail, call or make contact with us so we can get you a spot whether it be car sitting, serving coffee, hot chocolate, sodas, or some of the food. We will also need to decorate the trains inside and perhaps outside. If you would like to volunteer for any of this, ride in the kiddie train in the parade, or just help out at the museum, let us know. We will have more information as it gets closer.

Have you got some ideas for us this year. Maybe bring a Popcorn Machine and you serve fresh hot popcorn from a caboose? Have you got a Cotton Candy machine and are willing to bring it and operate it? Got decorating ideas and want to do it? We will consider ideas.

The ramps have been coated The ramp at the memorabilia car and the dock & ramp at the box car have their new "Non-Skid/Non-Slip" coating surface on them now. It's a whole new secure feeling when walking on them now, and I know the public will appreciate it when entering or leaving the memorabilia car now too. You can see the surface grit in the close-up photo above.

A B-B-Q sandwich meal with chips and candy bars was a welcomed delight on this workday. This meal came from the great folks at Richards BBQ. Steve and Jimmy are great supporters of the "We're Moving Ahead" program and did their part again. The workers work hard and they eat good. Not a bite wasted. Thank You Richards B-B-Q!!!!
