WFRRM JULY 2011 Newsletter

The online publication

Hello WFRRM members and friends. Welcome to the WFRRM July 2011 Online Newsletter.

This online publication is our way of keeping in touch with our members & friends and an attempt at getting more of our friends to join the fun at the museum. wfrrm@hotmail.com

PLEASE NOTE: Save the Newsletter address above (URL), of this Newsletter, to your FAVORITES List, and you can go back and view it or show it to someone else at any time. We keep them on the server.

"We're Moving Ahead" We are The New and Improved Wichita Falls Railroad Museum because the current "team" will be working and planning to make many good things happen at the Museum for the 2011 seasons. This Museum has accomplished things recently and has seen some very positive moves that it has never seen before in its history.

4th in the Falls Postponed Due to Dry Conditions

Due to extremely dry weather in the City of Wichita Falls the “4th in the Falls” celebration has been postponed. The event, in it’s entirety, has been rescheduled for Saturday, September 3rd beginning at 6pm.

Our Kiddie Train is scheduled to be inside the Exhibit hall giving rides to all. Yes, in the airconditioned comfort. Come join us!!!!

This Month we decided to show the inside of the gift shop and the many gifts we have. This is where all visitors come first. They pay the $1.00 per person gate fee, purchase kiddie train & Pump Car tickes, and sign the guest register. Our stanchions are here to guide folks to the gift shop first.

Also we will be painting the stanchions bright orange and using white ski rope with them. We may use these at places like the Multi Purpose Event Center (MPEC) or have a few more made. We had the welder make these out of scrap materials we already had.

A message from the President

Let me start by giving a big thanks to Belinda and Ray for providing another successful specially arranged Museum tour. Belinda and Ray are both a part of the WFRRM Board and do a great job on our Action Team. Thanks again guys for all of the help.

Speaking of the Board, it is time once again to be thinking about new Board members. If you would like to serve on our Board of Trustees or our Advisory Board, please send us an e-mail at wfrrm(at)hotmail.com. The Board meets quarterly, usually on Saturday afternoon, to conduct the business of the Museum. WFRRM Members with any interest in the Board are encouraged to contact us, and those with a talent for fundraising or grant writing are greatly needed. To become a member of the Board of Trustees you must be a WFRRM Member in good standing. If you would like to find out more about becoming a member of the Board please let us know we would love to visit with you.

Due to the heat wave, neither the Kiddie Train nor the Pump Car has been running much this summer. However, while supplies last we are still offering a “free sauna” with every tour and it feels like the supply will be available thru August and maybe into September.

Upcoming events WFRRM will be a part of include:

  • "4th in the Falls" celebration at MPEC September 3rd beginning at 6pm
  • Stroll ‘n Roll (Museum Day) - Saturday, September 10 (10:00 – 5:00)
  • City Lights - TBA (Sometime in November)
We need volunteers during project days and on Saturdays.
If you would like to volunteer, please, send us an e-mail at:

Bronna McNeely
President - Wichita Falls Railroad Museum

Photos below show another workday. This one, in July, the inmates mowed and trimmed all the grass. We can never stop thanking the Wichita County Sheriff's Dept. Inmate Work Program. They do a great job!!!!

The speeders are looking so good, I felt it was time for a few close-ups. We still need work done on them. We could use sombody who likes to do woodwork and replace a few boards on them. We will paint the wheels soon.

The next 3 photos are random shots from around the museum.

The next 2 photos are shots of the Santa Fe hopper car that is in the rail yard across from the museum. It has sat there since January of 2002 as being pulled for the reason of "bad order", usually meaning, something is wrong with it and it cannot be used until it has been repaired and approved.

This is an old "Atchison Topeka Santa Fe" car with the original logos and numbering still on it. There will obviously be no more ATSF equipement with the ATSF logo alone, and has not been any for some time now since the merger with Burlington Northern, now Burlington Northern Santa Fe or BNSF.

For many years this car and many others like it in, carried bulk products to and from Grain elevators and to Certainteed and PPG glass plants by our local area railroads.

Last month, after setting in the local rail yard for 9 years, the car was lifted off its trucks (wheel sets) and layed on its side to be scrapped. Yes it's awaiting the cutting torches. I contacted one of our own members and sponsors, Richard Zuber, whom is also an engineer for BNSF. He put me on track to the person at BNSF who helps process donations such as this. Hopefully they can roll this into our museum and save it from the scrappers.

At last check, the person I submitted the Request paperwork to, stated he had forwarded the request to the next channel. We are keeping our fingers crossed, but there are no guarentees.

The last 2 photos are photos of the new railroad museum and model train layout in Duncan Oklahoma. They have the old Rock Island 905 and a MoPac transfer caboose. One hour north of here.

We are looking for more than a few good members, and we need YOU to be one of them.

Like many historic preservation museums, we are in need of funding to continue future operations and growth. Limited funding means we don't always get to maintain our equipment as we would like. Our overhead is not huge. However, just paying the utilities each month often keeps us from painting, replacing wood, and doing necessary repairs of numerous items.

Our current monthly cost for utilities is approximately: Water - $60.00, Phone - $60.00, Electricity - $160.00, and Gas - $20.00. Trying to maintain a family friendly entrance fee of $1 per person, we need 300 visitors a month just to cover these costs. If you like our Museum, like what you see, and like what we bring to the community, please help by becoming a member. Thank You.

We have several levels of membership to fit your budget.

____ Railroad Tycoon - $500+

____ Engineer - $250+

____ Brakeman - $100+

____ Conductor - $50+

____ Passenger - $20+

*All levels of giving include a one-year family membership (providing free entry into the museum, free rides on the kiddie train and pump car, the Railroad Museum Newsletter, and invitations to special events).

Tycoon and Engineer levels also have the opportunity to use the Pullman or Dinning Car at a reduced rate.

The "Mad About Pulmonary Fibroses" organization Entered the "Decorate a train car" contest that we had last November 20th at the Christmas "Downtown Lights Celebration", and won 1st place with their colorful decorations and lights in the Pullman Car. They went all out and did a fantastic job of decorating and making folks aware of their cause. Hats off to Crystal and everybody involved!!!!

Hi Larry.........
Thanks for the photos. We received them from a member of ours back in January and placed them in our Monthly Newsletter. Please check them out at: http://www.wfrrm.com/nl/jan11/
We are not certain on the locations of all the photos but we like the ones that are definately from here. We always welcome old photos from this area so send more if you have them.

We also gave you credit for the photos too. If we get enough photos of this area, we will create a web page on the website for them.

Hi Rusty;

Thank You Kindly for replying. I did sent the photos to ray and then I heard nothing of them after that. So I thought that he didn't do anything about them. I also did't know that you had a newsletter.

As I didn't look to see if you had the more info from the pics, here it is.
For pics 1 to 6 : They were taken in the WF yard.

- 7 & 8 should be Childress TX , FW&D shops.
- 9 & 10 are Quanah, TX.
- 11 is the WF yard
- 12 is the Katy North yard.

Also, for picture number 2, can anyone ID the railroaders in the pic?

And for picture #12. Can some body go to the same spot and take a present day picture?

From what I can dig up, the engine shed is now an enclosed building and still in use. If you can get permission from the railroad company to do it, I think it would be nice to give the RR company a then and now set.

Thank you kindly for your time and help.

Laurence Orr

Thanks Larry..........

Thats the info I was looking for.

Nobody has replied about the men in the photos one way or another...........

Occasionally I talk to Martin of WTJ (former MKT yard) and since I am a photographer, I have asked him if he would like any, "any" photos I may have of his operation, and ironically his reply was always, "I see this stuff every day. I don't want photos of it." hee hee........ I can see his point and he's a nice guy. The scenery hasn't changed much at all. I'll send some photos.

Yes, the Newsletter..........

Lots of folks are having fun at the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum.

From Newsletter Editor

We are currently looking for someone who likes woodworking or who would like to cut & fit boards to repair our Speeders as seen in the above photos. If you are willing to donate your time and help the Museum, please send us an e-mail........ Thanks.

We still need sombody who is willing to bring their Camcorder and tripod to the Museum during our events and video record parts of the event.

We are attempting to document these events for historical purposes, for the Museum Newsletters and archives. Electronic digital records are a must these days. Your camcorder can be analog (tape) and I will digitize the museum's copy & yours will be untouched.

Camcorder experience, photo journalism & such would be a plus. Shakey videos can't be used, hence, the need for a tripod.

"We're Moving Ahead"............... See you at the Museum!
