"We're Moving Ahead" We are The New and Improved Wichita Falls Railroad Museum because the current "team" will be working and planning to make many good things happen at the Museum for the 2011 seasons. This Museum has accomplished things recently and has seen some very positive moves that it has never seen before in its history.

4th in the Falls Postponed Due to Dry Conditions

Due to extremely dry weather in the City of Wichita Falls the “4th in the Falls” celebration has been postponed once again. The event, in it’s entirety, has been rescheduled for Saturday, December 31st beginning at 6pm.

Our Kiddie Train is scheduled to be inside the Exhibit hall giving rides to all. Yes, in the airconditioned or heated comfort. Come join us!!!!

Last month we had photos from inside the Gift Shop. This month the inmates changed the looks of the gift shop significantly, and wow, it looks much better!!!! See below.

Teresa, our sales clerk, has done some good business the past few Saturdays so we decided to make the gift shop a little more user friendly as well as visitor friendly. What the eyes see first are usually the most successful sellers and Kenny, the gift shop manager, knows well what to sell and how to market it.

Now, as soon as you open the door, the building appears full of gifts & toys as shown in the first photo below.

The Speeders are now finished and look great with their new coats of paint. It makes ya wanna hop on and go down the track for a ride!!!!

Photos below You can't say these guys didn't earn their keep today. They carried this very heavy pot bellie stove to the trailer and lifted it from the trailer below, up into this Railway Post Office car, RPO car. These guys work hard and never complain, even working in this heat. They do a great job!!!!

The heavy lifting and hard jobs, are well supervised in extream heat conditions these days. The harder jobs are done in the cooler part of the morning. Easier jobs are saved for the hotter part of the day. They work hard for us and we keep them hydrated and feed them food they like. Come on cooler weather!!!!

A message from the President

Help Wanted: The Wichita Falls Railroad Museum needs volunteers most Saturdays from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. If you like trains and like talking to people, we have a place for you to shine. September will be a big month for us and we could use your help. Along with our normal Saturday duties, we have some upcoming events that could use a little extra man or woman power. Some of the upcoming events include:

Stroll n Roll (Museum Day) Sept. 10 from 10:00 am – 5:00 p.m.

We will need volunteers for the Model Railroad, Kiddie Train, Pump Car, and tour guides.

Texas / Oklahoma Fair Sept. 13 – 17 from 6:00 – 10:00 pm. Tuesday – Friday, and 1:00 – 10:00 Saturday

We need volunteers to staff the booth.

Please, let us know if you are available for these events. If you know someone else that might have an interest, pass the word along to him or her as well.

Upcoming events WFRRM will be a part of include:

  • Stroll ‘n Roll (Museum Day) - Saturday, September 10 (10:00 – 5:00)
  • City Lights - November 19th (4:00pm till 8:00pm - Parade starts at 7:00pm)
  • "4th in the Falls" celebration at MPEC December 31st beginning at 6pm

We need volunteers during project days and on Saturdays.
If you would like to volunteer, please, send us an e-mail at:

Still looking back in history The "Doodlebugs" played a large part in America's history where short runs were needed, usually between towns, and on runs to carry Mail, passengers, freight and baggage.

Sometimes they were just a single unit and others may have a combination of different, but few cars, usually 4 or less total.

MKT Doodlebugs above Not sure where these photos were shot.

The 3 Burlington Units below were setting next to the ice plant which was across 9th street south of the train station, now the tracks of our museum. You can see the top of the "freight end" of the Union Station in the first photo.

We are looking for more than a few good members, and we need YOU to be one of them.

Like many historic preservation museums, we are in need of funding to continue future operations and growth. Limited funding means we don't always get to maintain our equipment as we would like. Our overhead is not huge. However, just paying the utilities each month often keeps us from painting, replacing wood, and doing necessary repairs of numerous items.

Our current monthly cost for utilities is approximately: Water - $60.00, Phone - $60.00, Electricity - $160.00, and Gas - $20.00. Trying to maintain a family friendly entrance fee of $1 per person, we need 300 visitors a month just to cover these costs. If you like our Museum, like what you see, and like what we bring to the community, please help by becoming a member. Thank You.

We have several levels of membership to fit your budget.

____ Railroad Tycoon - $500+

____ Engineer - $250+

____ Brakeman - $100+

____ Conductor - $50+

____ Passenger - $20+

*All levels of giving include a one-year family membership (providing free entry into the museum, free rides on the kiddie train and pump car, the Railroad Museum Newsletter, and invitations to special events).

Tycoon and Engineer levels also have the opportunity to use the Pullman or Dinning Car at a reduced rate.

The "Mad About Pulmonary Fibroses" organization Entered the "Decorate a train car" contest that we had last November 20th at the Christmas "Downtown Lights Celebration", and won 1st place with their colorful decorations and lights in the Pullman Car. They went all out and did a fantastic job of decorating and making folks aware of their cause. Hats off to Crystal and everybody involved!!!!

From Newsletter Editor

We are currently looking for someone who likes woodworking or who would like to cut & fit boards to repair our Speeders as seen in the above photos. If you are willing to donate your time and help the Museum, please send us an e-mail........ Thanks.

We still need sombody who is willing to bring their Camcorder and tripod to the Museum during our events and video record parts of the event.

We are attempting to document these events for historical purposes, for the Museum Newsletters and archives. Electronic digital records are a must these days. Your camcorder can be analog (tape) and I will digitize the museum's copy & yours will be untouched.

Camcorder experience, photo journalism & such would be a plus. Shakey videos can't be used, hence, the need for a tripod.

"We're Moving Ahead"............... See you at the Museum!
